在辛亥革命之后，被光复的17个省代表在南京集聚商讨并推选出领导人，而孙中山先生被推选为中华民国临时大总统，当时由于币制尚未建立，为稳固当时经济，以供流通需要，临时政府财政部长陈锦涛，于民国元年3月11日呈文大总统孙中山，鼓铸新货币以为整顿。图案采用大总统孙中山肖像。4月宣告建都后，国民政府积极筹发行以孙中山肖像为图案的新国币。在民国时期，铸造发行了镌有孙中山先生头像各种版式的货币。而镍币便是其中一种。
